What do those three things have in common? Well, when you put them altogether and place me into the equation, it adds up. Here’s the story…Alan and I went to the wedding of one of Al’s good friends, Tom:
Before we arrived at the beautiful/gorgeous/amazing house, we of course first had to park the car. I was too busy looking at the view, gathering my purse, and slipping my shoes on to pay attention to the nearly weightless little object sitting in my lap. While getting out of the car, I took one step, felt that nearly weightless little object on my lap move then heard my phone fall to the ground and slide…oh yes, it didn’t just fall into the gutter and be done with it. We were parked right by a storm drain, a deep storm drain and the phone fell and dropped out of my sight before I had a chance to really realize what was happening. Grr!! I was so bummed! We didn’t have time to even think about getting it because the wedding was going to be starting very soon. So I tried to perk up, but first had to complain about it to a few of our friends.
So now we can skip ahead to the point of this story.
I have a friend, Brett, who I have known forever. As in since we were 4 years old. We were in all the same Sunday school classes growing up, same kindergarten and first grade class, the same elementary school, high school…he also became Alan’s really good friend when Al moved into our ward and they were eventually roommates in college. Oh, and we discovered back in high school that we are third cousins once removed times twenty…or something like that:) We share the same great, great, great and maybe one more great grandpa. The point is, I’ve known him forever and I should have known that as soon as I told him my phone had slipped into a storm drain where there just happened to be a man hole—I should have known he’d be totally stoked and ready to climb down the hole to get it for me—in his nice clothes no less! His wife and I tried to persuade him not to, Karlie reminded him of the really nice suit pants he was wearing, but there was no dissuading:
When the lid came off there were cob webs across the opening and it was nearly pitch black looking down into the drain. Did that worry Brett at all? Did he clear the cob webs away? Nope! He climbed right in…
And look what we came up with!!
Success! He rescued my cell phone! It landed flat on the battery side and except for a little mud, it was in perfect condition! We are guessing (and hoping) that since we were in a fairly ritzy part of town, on a hill where the only run-off would be from the rain (no homes above this point on the road), we were safe to say that it wasn’t radioactive or contain swine flu. We did of course fully sanitize our hands and the phone:)
p.s. The best part about this whole story is that Alan, Karlie and I were standing by the whole time doing nothing but watching. As in, I wasn’t taking pictures(!). We didn’t think of that until AFTER the storm drain lid was back in place. We made Brett recreate the whole thing for blogging purposes. He’s a good friend like that:)

Glad you got your phone back, and hopefully Brett didn't ruin his suitpants! :)
Sweet Brett. What would we do without friends like that?
