Photo Project
"WHO ARE YOU: A SELF PORTRAIT"
Since photography is such a personal means of expression we almost never give much thought to how someone on the OTHER side of the lens may feel about being photographed. We are usually only aware of our need to capture the essence of that other person in a revealing portrait. So now, turn the lens onto yourself and create a visual, expressive and provocative (!?!) image of...YOURSELF. Hence the "Self Portrait".
Subject: You. You must be recognizable in the photo. We the viewers MUST know that it is you.
Procedure: Place yourself in a dramatic setting. Use interesting and expressive lighting. Portray yourself as you have always wanted to be or are afraid you might become. You may take a literal or fantastical approach. EXPRESS YOURSELF!!!
Have fun and put some thought into this job.
Research the techniques and styles of other photographers.
Shoot at least 2 rolls of film (72 images!!). Select your best 2 images and print them.
Your prints may be connected or have no relationship to each other at all except the subject.
Use: Your compositional Skills, Light Painting techniques, Depth of Field, etc........
Seriously, I need your help!!! If you have any ideas--please share! My assignment is due Wednesday night at 7pm. If I get some good hints/tips as to what I should do, I'll post the pictures I turn in--promise!!

Well what are you ... fun, exciting, colorful, a mother of twins, a wife to an accountant ;), spiritual, lds, multitasker ... I imagine you in a white dress / skirt(representing spiritualality)with a smile on your face (because you are happy and have fun) with the boys in the background (because you are a mother) and a "I heart Alan" pin on your chest (because you are married) with color around you (either you next to a nice lively colored wall or something or natural colors) ... outside of course ... and you with your smile - the Katie smile ... so cute.
Or you could see if you could get the boys to hang from a tree branch or monkey bars and you hold there bottoms like you are holding them up at the same time. Like you are going to juggle them ...
Or you could ummmm ... I could go on and on ... I'm weird.
So many great ideas Jill! I'm loving the image you portray:)
sounds like the instructor wants something artsy and not ordinary. not a regular snapshot of yourself.
so if I'm thinking of ME (that's what you asked) and the description of the assignment I would set the tripod up shooting me looking in the mirror.
Scene 1: looking "mom-ish" - normal, not cute, no make up, crazy hair, tired, possibly very dirty. you know, normal. and the look in the mirror is concerned. Am I fat? Do I do enough? Am I getting old? Short depth of field, focus on facial expression, all else slightly out of focus. Maybe a worms-eye view. This one is printed in b/w.
Scene 2: a happier version. confident. cute. dressed up. make up. And in this one the setting is different - could be slow dancing with hubby, could be reading a book, crafting, driving somewhere while singing in the car, praying, sitting in a field of flowers, etc. A little more depth of field, but still not the entire shot. Maybe a birds eye view. This one is printed in color.
hhhhmmmmm, but that's just me. When I was 19 and in photo class in college I turned in a macro shot of a nipple piercing. So, there you go. I go artsy.
I have an idea for a self portrait in the mirror shot. Hopefully it turns out as cute/cool looking as I imagine. If it does, I'll post it! :)
First thought that jumped into my head - I still remember Katie the cheerleader...that could make for some fun pics! :)
Good luck!
I think you should pose as a 50's housewife. Polka dot dress, pearls, red lipstick, and a cute apron. Life as a homemaker is crazy but you do it all with style, grace and a smile on your face. Faded colors would look cool. Like a vintage photo.
You make me want to take a photography class! First thing that came to my mind was what I'm afraid of becoming... for me I pictured me fat (you would have to add some), in gym clothes, unshowered, with messy kids (in background) or food hand prints all over my clothes because my kids wiped their hands on me, etc.. Jill and Robin have some awesome ideas, though! Good luck! I can't wait to see how it turns out!
I was thinking along the same lines as Diane. Something over the top!
For anyone still reading these comments, I just want you to know how much I HATE this assignment!! I may or may not end up showing you what I use, I can tell you it is nothing spectacular!
