A Monday Flashback!

This may be the final installment of the Katie and Alan love saga, but then again, it may not be. I'll have to see how the re-telling develops and how long it's going to be. If you're still sticking around for this, I'm so beyond impressed. If you want to catch up, go here:

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

When I last wrote, Alan and I had had our first email exchange, emailing each other before knowing that the other person had done the same. Fate? I think so! Well, after my shock wore off, the excitement kicked in big time! I could hardly believe it and I was so excited to tell my mom and others about it. But at the same time I was super cautious because there was certainly a chance things still wouldn't work out. I mean, it had been 5 years since we had really dated, since before his mission.

Well after our first couple of quick emails, I didn't hear back from Alan for almost a week. Hello!?! A week!! Email is instantaneous! That's what's so great about it, right? Wasn't he feeling the same way I was feeling? Like he wanted everything to all work out, perfectly and without haste?! (yes, I've been reading Jane Austen--make haste, make haste!) In short, yes, that was what he wanted. But he wanted to be sure this really was going to go somewhere and he also wanted to be sure that this was something he actually wanted. I had hurt him in the past and I'm sure he was thinking that it could happen all over again. Also, considering the fact that it was mid-terms week during his final semester at BYU, while in a competitive major and he's a very dedicated student, I'm impressed he ever even wrote me. Thankfully, he did finally email again.

We emailed back and forth a few more times before...drum roll please...we TALKED ON THE PHONE! I know my heart was pounding with nervousness. I can't remember which one of us called the other one first, but I do remember calling his house once and his roommate, Brandon, answered the phone. I was nervous when I heard his voice that he was going to hang up on me, but he was very nice and we chatted a bit before he handed the phone over to Alan. Alan and I talked for about an hour and a half! I have no idea what we talked about, but it was a lot of fun and I remember being so excited about it.

Fast forward a month or two to December when Alan graduated from BYU and was headed home. Boy was I nervous! I wish I could remember the timeline of how things happened better than I do. I remember him coming home on my sister's birthday, December 17th. He called me while we were at lunch celebrating and I wanted to jump up and leave right then, but I stayed in my seat until it was acceptable to leave my favorite sister's b-day lunch. (To be fair, she's my only sister, but she's fabulous so of course she's my favorite:).

After hanging out just a few times we both knew that we were either going to get married or we had to completely avoid one another, which would have been hard living so close to one another and having a lot of the same friends. Extreme, yes, but there was a lot of history and hurt feelings behind us so it was one or the other.

Over the next few months, we had our ups and downs and doubts and misgivings, but we also had good times and a lot of fun together.

Now, if you didn't already know the outcome (us being married and all), this would be a great point to stop and leave you hanging. So, I think I'm going to do that. Go ahead and act like you don't know what happens and on Friday you'll get the rest of the details! :)

Katie - you amaze me -- I don't know how you do it all with those cute little twin boys! Yours and Al's story is Great - I love it - it is like we get our own little soap opera of someone we actually know --- Any way I also love your 52 week project - and If you don't mind I am going to copy you --- I think it is such a healthy thing to always be looking for something to be greatful for - because it is so so much easier to find something that is not going right... Thank you for being an inspiration!
